Ankara, formerly Angora, the capital city of Turkey and the country’s second largest city after Istanbul, is located in the northwest about 200km south of the Black Sea, on a hill above the Anatolian plateau. It has been the seat of government since 1923 and houses all foreign embassies.
Ankara can trace its history back to the bronze age, and has been a part of historic events through several great civilisations, including the Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Greek, Romans, Galatians and Ottomans. The shades of this three thousand year-old cultural history can be seen in the old district around ancient Ankara citadel.
The small town, known only for the production of mohair from angora goats by the early 20th century, has developed into a modern capital, lively and on the move, with nearly four million people living there. Nowadays the city an important commercial and key industrial location.
Venue: Ankara Arena Sports Hall
With a seating capacity of 10,000 spectators, the Ankara Arena Sports Hall is a brand-new complex built in 2010 and managed by the Turkish Basketball Federation.
