Team profile

Japan

The Japanese team consists of members selected from various club teams in the V.League and the top high school teams. The team exemplifies the typical characteristics of the Japanese – dexterity, hard work, discipline and an endeavour to bring out the players’ individual personalities. The Japanese players will surely fight fiercely with their opponents, as each player has tremendous capability and volleyball talent. The excellent teamwork helps in the resolute and speedy combination plays, which is regarded as a tradition of Japanese volleyball that is a pure display of dynamism and consistency. Leading the squad is Kiyoshi Abo, whose coaching methods have been commended due to his coaching policy not to stereotype his players, but to develop their full potential.

Abo Kiyoshi

Kiyoshi Abo, 44, is a specialist in defence. He graduated from Meiji University and furthered his studies at the University of Tsukuba Graduate Schools and Programmes. He coached Ito Yokado Prior and Takefuji Bamboo women’s club team from 2000 to 2009, and then became assistant coach of the Japan women’s senior national team from 2009 to 2013. He helped coach Masayoshi Manabe in winning bronze at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in 2010 and the London 2012 Olympic games. In the 2013/2014 season, he was an assistant coach of the Hisamitsu Springs in the women’s first division national league. He is currently the head coach of both the U20 and U20 women’s national squads.
