Egypt had dominated African volleyball in the 1970s and 1980s, until Kenya emerged to become the powerhouse of the continent. Although the North African country has not competed in the last two editions of the senior continental event, the have fared much better in age-group competitions. Egypt won the inaugural U23 African Nations championship in 2014 in Algiers. They've also claimed consecutive gold medals at the African U20 championships ever since 2004. At FIVB age-group competitions Egypt's best ranking has been 9th at the U18 events in 1993 and 2005. Egypt did not qualify to the inaugural U23 World Championship in 2013.
